What is pressure?
Pressure is a physical quantity defined as the force per unit area acting perpendicular to the surface of an object. In simpler terms, pressure is the magnitude of the force acting on a surface area in a perpendicular direction. Therefore, the unit of pressure is N/m² or Pa (Pascal).
Commonly used pressure measurement units today
There are many methods to measure pressure, but the most common is still using gauges and sensors. For gauges, the choice of measurement unit will depend on the actual application. However, some of the most commonly used pressure measurement units today include: bar, Kpa, Mpa, mbar, psi, mmHg, mmH2O…
Normally, each pressure gauge has only one unit: bar, psi, Mpa,.. However, in some cases we can choose a gauge that displays 2 different units at the same time such as: bar & psi; kg/cm2 & Mpa…..
For pressure sensors, it is completely different. Its task is to convert pressure value to electrical value (4-20mA or 0-10V). Therefore, we cannot choose the measurement unit as we want. We only choose a measurement range lower than the actual measurement range. To do this, we need to understand the relationship between pressure measurement units. Because when we understand this relationship, we can completely choose any type of pressure sensor without depending on its unit.
